Job Description

Position Overview

The City of Stockton is seeking to fill a vacancy in our Public Works Department for the position of Associate Engineer. Under general supervision, the Associate Engineer performs a variety of professional engineering or surveying work ranging from routine to complex. Duties include development review, design and inspection of public works projects, design and modification of traffic control devices, and coordinating traffic improvement projects. The role may also involve directing subordinate staff and ensuring contract compliance. Incumbents will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Fridays, with alternating Fridays off.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of professional engineering or surveying field and office work.
  • Conduct development review, design, and/or inspection of public works projects.
  • Design and modify traffic control devices.
  • Develop recommendations for coordinating traffic improvement projects.
  • Direct the work of subordinate staff engaged in technical and professional engineering and/or surveying duties.
  • Prepare complex engineering specifications and legal descriptions.
  • Ensure contract compliance and analyze traffic planning and control programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Possession of a valid California registration as a Licensed Land Surveyor or EIT.
  • At least two years of engineering experience in design, development review, construction, office and field surveying, or traffic engineering at a level equivalent to the City's Assistant Engineer class.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and the physical strength to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registration as a Licensed Land Surveyor or EIT.
  • Experience in traffic engineering.
