Job Description

Position Overview

The City of Mesa is recruiting for current vacancies in the Water Reclamation Plant Assignment at either the Water Resources Plant Maintenance Specialist I or Specialist II level. These positions offer career progression through the full salary range based on successful performance and annual budget approval. The initial application review will begin on Monday, September 22, 2025, and continue weekly as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • For Specialist I – Learn and perform entry-level plant maintenance tasks under supervision, including installing, maintaining, and repairing various plant equipment and facilities at designated water reclamation plants.
  • Assist journey-level personnel and observe lead maintenance staff to progressively increase assignment complexity.
  • For Specialist II – Independently perform specialized, journey-level maintenance and operational duties at water treatment or reclamation plants, including troubleshooting and equipment monitoring.
  • Follow proper safety protocols and use appropriate safety equipment; be prepared for emergency call-out, overtime, and scheduled stand-by as required.
  • Meet criteria-based promotion standards and complete required coursework, on-the-job training, and performance evaluations.

Required Qualifications

  • Specialist I: High school diploma or GED, plus one year of experience in water/wastewater plant or mechanical equipment maintenance.
  • Specialist II: High school diploma or GED with 3–5 years of journey-level experience in repairing or maintaining pumps, water treatment/reclamation equipment, or similar mechanical systems.
  • Must obtain forklift operator certification within six months of hire for both positions.
  • Possession of a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date is required.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a medical evaluation to qualify for tight-fitting respirator use in accordance with CFR 1910.134 and maintain certification.
  • Required 40-hour HazWoper Certification (with annual refresher) is mandatory.
  • For Specialist II, a minimum of 30 professional development hours (PDHs) every three years is required to maintain ADEQ certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • For Specialist I: Possession of Grade I (or higher) Water or Wastewater Treatment System Operator certification from the ADEQ (or an equivalent certification by reciprocity) and at least six months of successful performance in the City of Mesa Water Resources Department Intern program.
