Job Description
Position Overview
The Senior Design Transportation Engineer at Caltrans plays a critical role in managing design activities for transportation projects. Reporting to a Supervising Transportation Engineer, you will serve as a Design Manager (DM) and Task Manager (TM) and may also function as a Project Manager (PM) on select projects. This role involves directing design staff, coordinating project schedules and budgets, and ensuring quality deliverables through adherence to design standards and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage design activities as the Design Manager and Task Manager, and serve as Project Manager on select projects.
- Direct and supervise design staff in preparing project Plans, Specifications, Estimates (PS&E), technical studies, and related documents.
- Coordinate with District functions, Headquarters Structure Design, Legal Department, and local agencies to ensure timely project delivery.
- Assign tasks to team members and maintain work agreements to establish budgets and schedules.
- Provide guidance on design standards, policies, and practices to ensure accountability and quality.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Professional Engineer’s License and registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising design teams and managing transportation projects.
- Ability to coordinate project tasks, manage budgets, and adhere to established timelines.
- Submission of a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) that clearly addresses supervisory, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of all project phases including design, environmental review, right-of-way, and construction close-out.
- Proven ability to coordinate, negotiate, and communicate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Experience in leading teams in a dynamic, high-pressure environment while ensuring excellence in project outcomes.
