Position Overview
At Dow, our people and their diverse perspectives drive innovative solutions. We are seeking an Electrical Studies and Protection Design Engineer to join our team in Houston, Texas. In this role, you will provide power systems studies and relay protection expertise for capital projects valued over $10MM. You will work within a global capital engineering organization alongside disciplines such as Civil, Piping, Mechanical, Instrumentation, and Process Automation, applying Dow’s design tools and established work processes. Please note that this position is located at our Houston Dow Center and does not offer relocation assistance.
Key Responsibilities
- Accountable for the required protection deliverables produced by the project electrical design team.
- Represent the electrical design team in project meetings.
- Develop and review detailed equipment specifications, inquiry/order packages, job instructions, drawings, and installation details for construction and 3rd party engineering contracts.
- Develop major electrical equipment specifications and coordinate with internal procurement and suppliers.
- Create Electrical Single Line Diagrams, Meter & Relay One Line Diagrams, Three-Lines Diagrams, Interconnection Diagrams, Control Logic Diagrams, Relay Elevation Drawings, and Control Schematics.
- Work on systems with various voltage levels and develop electrical models to perform system studies.
- Perform and review Power System Studies (Short Circuit, Load Flow, Protective Relay Coordination, Transient Studies, etc.) to ensure appropriate equipment ratings.
- Develop, document, and review protection settings and logic.
- Perform calculations for sizing low, medium, and high voltage distribution equipment and implement relay communications using multiple protocols.
- Lead or support factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, system commissioning, and equipment start-up activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in protective relaying coordination and practices.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States (no visa sponsorship available).
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of industry codes and standards (IEC, NFPA, ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, BSS, Cenelec, etc.).
- Experience in heavy industrial, petrochemical, refinery, or utility power systems engineering.
- Proficient in using ETAP.
- Knowledgeable of generator protection and control schemes.
- Able to develop and implement testing procedures for protection and control systems.
- Familiarity with SEL and GE protective relays.
- Understanding of circuit breaker technologies (SF6, vacuum, GIS, AIS, GCBs).
- Experience in testing and commissioning electrical power equipment.
- Ability to verify protective relay settings and logic through function testing.
- Working knowledge of MicroStation SE and/or AutoCAD and strong interpersonal as well as time-management skills.
