Job Description

Position Overview

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant will integrate computational/molecular modeling, structure determination, and functional biochemical assays to understand fundamental biological processes and their dysregulation in disease states. The work focuses on studying telomere maintenance, post-translational modification signaling, and prostaglandin-mediated stem cell differentiation/tissue regeneration, with the ultimate goal of translating mechanistic insights into therapeutic drug development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced protein expression and purification studies, perform structural and biochemical assays (e.g., computational/molecular modeling, structure determination via X‑ray crystallography or cryo‑EM) and integrate these with cellular phenotype analysis to study fundamental biological processes. (70%)
  • Record experimental results and maintain detailed, organized records using digital tools, ensuring comprehensive documentation of data and procedures. (9%)
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and manage inventory by ordering necessary laboratory supplies, ensuring continuous lab operation. (6%)
  • Provide training and mentoring to new and rotating lab personnel, including summer and undergraduate students, to ensure effective technical assistance. (10%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including manuscript reviews and figure generation. (5%)

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science with 0 to 1 year of experience OR Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program with 0 to 2 years of experience.
  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures needed for protein purification, biochemical, and biophysical assays, including areas related to phosphatase and/or telomere biology.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment (e.g., HPLC/FPLCs, centrifuges, SDS-PAGE gels, Octet BLI, incubators/shakers).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  • Willingness to learn and utilize emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Reliance on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform job functions with consistent attendance and in-person presence during typical office hours.

Benefits & Perks

  • Compensation: The starting wage rate is $17.65 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data.
  • Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package including excellent healthcare, retirement plans, tuition assistance, paid time off, and a winter recess.
