Job Description

Position Overview

The New York Times is renowned for its independent journalism that informs a global audience across nearly 160 countries. In this role, as a Technical SEO Manager, you will be part of the SEO team responsible for enhancing the technical performance and search visibility of our news product. You will work closely with engineering, design, product, and data analytics teams to execute editorial and technical SEO strategies while ensuring our site remains compliant with the latest industry standards and Google’s guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and manage strategic search projects in collaboration with the technical SEO team, Audience team, and Product organization.
  • Analyze SEO performance metrics, translating complex data into actionable insights and strategic adjustments.
  • Prioritize SEO initiatives by evaluating potential impact against required effort to ensure focus on high-value work.
  • Perform ongoing technical audits to identify enhancements, bugs, and fixes, and document them in JIRA.
  • Ensure adherence to web performance standards, including Core Web Vitals, Time to First Byte (TTFB), and accessibility guidelines.
  • Analyze traffic fluctuations to provide real-time debugging, auditing, and diagnosis.
  • Monitor and benchmark competitors in the news space for technical insights and inspiration.
  • Develop and deliver technical SEO training programs for product and engineering teams.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of Google's search ecosystem, including algorithm updates and new features.
  • Utilize familiarity with advanced technologies and platforms, including AI search engines and bot protection.

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of technical SEO experience
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience working with product and engineering teams
  • 1+ years of experience communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, effectively weighing technical SEO work on UX and audience impact

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing multiple work streams
  • A strong understanding of current technical search best practices and their effective implementation
  • Proficiency with industry-leading SEO tools such as Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, Botify, Ahrefs, etc.
  • Familiarity with Schema.org, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, HTTP status codes, and web standards

Compensation

The annual base pay range for this role is between$100,000 - $130,000 USD.
