Job Description

Position Overview

The Director of Communications + Marketing is a Full Time, Exempt role located at HQ Sacramento, CA and reporting to the Vice President of Communications and Technology. Compensation: $80,000 - $90,000 DOE. Based in Sacramento, this role is responsible for developing and implementing CRA’s communications strategy and objectives. The position involves crafting comprehensive communications plans and executing a broad range of marketing and public relations activities to support advocacy, sales/membership, partnerships, training, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the Association’s comprehensive communications strategies, including content development, management, and measurement.
  • Oversee public and member communications, as well as CRA brand identity and marketing initiatives.
  • Produce the Confidential Bulletin Podcast (3 episodes monthly) and other promotional and informational materials.
  • Field all media requests and collaborate with the CEO and GA on responses, including drafting Op Eds, press releases, and letters to the editor.
  • Advance CRA’s brand through multi-channel marketing efforts, earned media, and public relations.
  • Design and direct public affairs campaigns that integrate legal, legislative, public education, communications, and organizing strategies.
  • Analyze state and local legislative implications to craft advocacy messaging, talking points, and media statements.
  • Manage communications channels including biweekly State Board updates, newsletters, and member communications.
  • Plan and produce the CRA’s monthly podcast and other multimedia education campaigns to enhance industry reputation.
  • Serve as the primary CRA contact for media inquiries and coordinate responses with executive leadership.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, news, and consumer habits.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, or a related field (Masters degree or advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a political-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding of political processes, campaigns, elections, and the California legislative environment.
  • Expertise in both digital and traditional marketing, with a demonstrated interest in AI marketing.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and content creation.
  • Excellent multitasking abilities with a proven track record of meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and website content management systems.
  • Familiarity with AP Style, copywriting, and editing best practices.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
