Job Description

Position Overview

Compensation: Minimum Pay Rate: $114,712.00, Maximum Pay Rate: $151,985.00.

SMUD, a community-owned, not-for-profit electric service providing power to over 1.4 million customers in the Sacramento area, is seeking a knowledgeable Associate (Journey) Mechanical Engineer to join its Power Generation Engineering Department. In this role, you will support both capital and mechanical maintenance projects for generating assets including hydroelectric, thermal, wind, photovoltaic, and a natural gas pipeline, as well as assist in implementing the gas pipeline Integrity Management program.

You will play a key role in ensuring reliable and efficient generation operations while adhering to regulatory requirements and standards, with growth opportunities from entry-level to journey-level based on training and certification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform minor to moderately complex mechanical design tasks and prepare Design Change Notification (DCN) packages.
  • Prepare engineering documentation and as-built drawings, ensuring compliance with SMUD policies and regulatory codes.
  • Assist in field investigations, collect measurement data, and verify facility installations through on-site inspections.
  • Coordinate project activities from design through construction and commissioning by working with supply chain services, contractors, and field crews.
  • Utilize CAD and GIS software to create, revise, and maintain engineering drawings and maps for various generating assets.
  • Support project management efforts, including schedule preparation, test and acceptance criteria development, and report production.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • At least three (3+) years of progressively responsible experience in the design, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems for power generating resources and pipelines.
  • Successful completion or progress toward an Engineer In Training (EIT) test – if not already passed, it must be completed within the first year of employment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer In Training (EIT) certification.
  • California Professional Registration as a Mechanical Engineer (PE).
