Job Description
Position Overview
Under direct or indirect supervision, the incumbent follows approved infection control, quality assurance, and departmental policies and procedures. You will collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments, trays, packs, reusable medical devices, and patient care equipment for inpatient nursing and medical office departments. Additionally, you will inventory, restock, and distribute instruments, medical equipment, and supplies throughout the Medical Center while processing inpatient operating room instruments. Grade: 390
Key Responsibilities
- Infection Control - Standard Precautions: Adhere to hand washing requirements, workflow patterns, standard precautions, sterility assurance, biological monitoring, and dress code.
- Quality Assurance Monitoring: Validate and maintain event-related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records; inventory check sheets; and equipment monitoring.
- Documentation: Meet regulatory requirements for sterilization, high-level disinfection, biological monitoring, and employee competencies. Accurately document and maintain daily records of all QA and sterilization functions as per Infection Control standards.
- Policies and Procedures: Adhere to organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
- Staff Development: Participate in employee orientation, meetings, and evaluation programs. Maintain current Sterile Processing Technician Certification and assist in departmental in-services and training.
- Decontamination Skills: Wear personal protective equipment; inspect, disassemble, sort, clean, and process reusable instruments and equipment; operate specialized cleaning equipment; follow manufacturer-recommended cleaning guidelines; maintain adequate cleaning supplies; and, when designated, reprocess endoscopes.
- Instrumentation Assembly: Identify, inspect, and assemble general and specialty instruments, as well as power, laser, and endoscopic equipment per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
- Preparation and Packaging: Select and prepare packaging materials according to manufacturer guidelines for sterilization of reusable instrumentation.
- Principles of Sterilization: Choose the appropriate sterilization method, maintain accurate records, properly load and unload sterilization cart items, and verify that sterilization parameters are met prior to distribution.
- Equipment and Supply Management: Collect, clean, check, distribute, and track patient care equipment; order new equipment as designated; inventory and replenish supplies; and report malfunctioning equipment.
- Workplace Safety: Demonstrate personal and work area safety, comply with facility safety policies (including those for bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases), take corrective actions to mitigate hazards, and attend required safety training.
- Professionalism: Exhibit strong written and oral communication skills, contribute to teamwork, adhere to work schedules, assist in in-service training, support departmental computer programs, and, when necessary, assume interdepartmental liaison responsibilities.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
- Must hold current CS/SPD Certification with either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management.
