Job Description

Position Overview

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Civil Roadway Engineer. This position is open to the Dallas-TX, Austin-TX, Houston-TX, and San Antonio-TX offices. Be involved in projects with our Transportation & Infrastructure Team and provide local technical assistance in the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects. Ensure documentation meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Assist with performing basic civil engineering tasks by researching and inspecting proposed and existing site conditions, resources, and transportation channels to ensure conformance with industry rules and standards.
  • Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality of infrastructure.
  • Assist with verifying site characteristics and offer technical support on engineering, design, and construction issues.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site logs.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including data collection and engineering surveys.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with design/build processes and concepts.
  • Knowledge of relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Proven self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking ability, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, and other related tools.
  • A proven track record of upholding workplace safety along with adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules as project requirements may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Ability to travel occasionally depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • Participation in local professional practice organizations.
