Position Overview
Location: Florida - Tampa Schedule: 8 Hr. X 5 Days
The Cable System Specialist supports Tampa Electric Company’s (TEC) network and downtown underground commercial distribution (DUCD) systems, as well as construction, maintenance and long-term planning projects at Tampa International Airport (TIA) and Tampa General Hospital (TGH). The role involves creating system maintenance work requests in the work management system, determining customer/system requirements, assisting DDTS with designs, estimates, and switching instructions, and coordinating activities between various departments, customers, and contractors. Routine assignments include standard downtown underground distribution along with projects of minimal complexity. Advancement is based on performance, qualifications, and technical needs rather than solely on tenure.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet with customers (including high profile large customers) and/or their agents to conduct needs and feasibility assessments, create work orders, determine schedules and milestone dates, manage communications, and coordinate maintenance/construction activities. (20%)
- Record and update all inspection and maintenance records for the Network service area. (10%)
- Create and/or process work requests including specifying network/DUCD material & equipment, reflecting financials, requesting utility locations, determining MOT requirements, producing construction/maintenance cost estimates, coordinating CIAC, and scheduling outages while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. (10%)
- Develop, facilitate, and participate in training on network/DUCD design, equipment, fault-locating procedures, and new technology; read and interpret network secondary and conduit maps; verify as-builts and produce estimates; oversee GIS construction print updates. (10%)
- Provide recommendations and estimates for the annual maintenance plan and associated budget. (10%)
- Assist in designing and installing fiber optic communications in downtown areas. (10%)
- Perform technical troubleshooting and infrared scanning of network, DUCD, TIA & TGH equipment using various instruments; coordinate repairs with Network Specialists. (10%)
- Act as a customer field liaison, providing technical assistance during emergency call-outs and scheduled outages. (10%)
- Collaborate with management on storm restoration plans for TEC’s downtown network & DUCD systems, including work with TIA and TGH. (10%)
Required Qualifications
- Education: Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience Required: 2 years of TEC Distribution Design Technician work experience OR 2 years with another electrical utility performing equivalent duties, including experience safely accessing and inspecting energized equipment.
- Licenses/Certifications: Required valid Florida State driver’s license with a safe driving record; completion of confined space training and MOT certification upon hire.
- Requirements: Must be able to quickly learn material associated with network and DUCD systems, operate high voltage cable thumper and FLIR infrared camera, interpret network secondary and conduit maps, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adjust priorities as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Preferred Associates degree in an applicable field.
- Experience: Preferred 3 or more years of Distribution Design Technician work experience.
- Knowledge/Skills: Demonstrated effective project management, leadership, and communication skills.
