Position Overview

We are seeking aMedical Assistant Certifiedto join our team at the Vascular and Wound Medicine Clinic, Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. This role, working36 hours per weekon a Day shift (Days, United States of America), involves providing indirect and direct patient care under the provider’s direction. You will support patient examinations, document vital signs and medical information, assist in virtual health visits, and perform various front desk workflows while ensuring the highest standards of care and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to legal responsibilities and requirements within the Medical Assistant role.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition by collecting and reporting data.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, supervisor, or appropriate resource.
  • Demonstrate excellence in care in all interactions with internal and external customers.
  • Maintain clinical and administrative skills per departmental competency guidelines.
  • Guide patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Travel to other facilities or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed.
  • Keep work areas, exam rooms, and equipment clean, orderly, and safe.
  • Assist with virtual health visits, including setting up the platform, precharting, and troubleshooting.
  • Document accurately in electronic medical records (EMR) and manage in-basket messages per provider’s instructions.
  • Perform front desk workflows such as patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, and cash handling.
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and collect copays as needed.
  • Perform additional duties including ordering supplies, tracking referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Medical Assisting certification from an accredited organization (e.g., CMA, RMA, CCMA, NHA, NRCMA, NCMA, NCCT). In cases where MA certification is not obtained, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABROE) may be acceptable (except in South Carolina).
  • BLS Basic Life Supportcertification by the American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St. Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire for independent patient care at BSMH).
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant postsecondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina).
  • For South Carolina applicants: completion of one of the following is required—
    • Accredited Medical Assistant postsecondary education program
    • Career and technical education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education
    • Medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military
    • United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program
    • Training program delivered in whole or part by a healthcare employer aligning to a nationally accredited certification exam
  • Completion of externship or clinical lab training is preferred.
  • 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience is preferred.
