Job Description

Position Overview

Project Engineer I – In this role, you will apply fundamental power system concepts and work with SEL products to support automation and protection systems. You will help train and assist customers in designing, configuring, validating, installing, commissioning, and operating these systems. This position demands a commitment to quality, safety and continuous improvement, as you prepare design specifications and detailed documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • 1. Possess, understand, and apply the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of the power system focus area and related SEL products.
  • 2. Train and assist customers with the creation, design, configuration, validation, installation, commissioning, and operation of automation and/or protection systems.
  • 3. Complete and implement assigned work within agreed upon scope, schedule, and budget to a high level of quality and safety.
  • 4. Participate in the preparation of functional design specifications.
  • 5. Prepare and maintain detailed design documents, reports, checklists, test reports, and deliverables.
  • 6. Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.
  • 7. Embrace the philosophy: Understand. Create. Simplify.
  • 8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a relevant discipline.
  • 2+ years of relevant application experience with electric power systems, industry practices, and focus area philosophies.
  • Good knowledge of electric power system protection and control, integration and/or automation, and communications applications.
  • Working knowledge of electric power system design, studies, ICT, and protective relay applications.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally a minimum of 25% based on the focus area.
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.
  • Ability to learn new skills, assume new responsibilities, and work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Satisfactory background check results and a negative drug test result(s) as required by SEL.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training certificate.
  • Experience in electrical utility, industrial plant, consulting engineering, or as a system integrator.
  • Project engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of Vision or other project management tracking software.
  • Familiarity with focus areas such as Protection, Automation, Design, Studies, Commissioning, Security, Networking, and Project Management.
  • Exposure to industrial control systems including automation software, PLCs, and industry protocols (IEC-61850, DNP, Modbus) is a plus.
  • Experience in business development, civil design, commissioning, and full life-cycle project management is advantageous.
  • Knowledge in areas such as network design, proposals, and system protection along with security and compliance standards (NERC/CIP, NIST SP800) will be considered favorably.
  • Experience using power system simulation tools like PSSE, ETAP, and/or RTDS with a strong foundation in electrical power systems.
