Job Description

Position Overview

At Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD), a leader in community health for over 55 years, the Phlebotomy Technician plays a key role in supporting our mission to provide caring, affordable, high‐quality health care to all—especially the uninsured, low‐income, and medically underserved. You will perform specimen collection and related procedures that are critical to accurate patient diagnostics and treatment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow all established guidelines for venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and collection of body fluid specimens.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and on time in accordance with department standards.
  • Identify and immediately report any issues that might affect test performance or result reporting.
  • Keep workstation and laboratory areas clean and compliant with departmental and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels of lab supplies and materials.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety protocols as per the FHCSD chemical hygiene plan and safety processes.
  • Perform specimen handling, storage, processing, and the appropriate Point-of-Care Waived Test following Laboratory Procedure Manual protocols.
  • Enter orders, update logs, and manage specimen cancellations in the computer tracking system.
  • Perform clerical duties related to the timely reporting and distribution of test results.
  • Undertake additional assigned duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • 0 - 4 years of experience performing venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and body fluid specimen collections.
  • High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certificate from an approved DHHS training facility is required.
  • Current California license or certificate as a Phlebotomy Technician.
  • Current American Heart Association healthcare provider CPR (BLS) or equivalent certification (ACLS, ATLS, or Advance Resuscitation Training) is required.
  • Valid California driver's license, personal vehicle, and proof of required insurance with an acceptable driving record; occasional travel between sites is necessary.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-based environment while managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity, along with strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with patients for whom English is a second language.
  • Basic computer skills to manage order entry, demographic data, and lab report processing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multi-lingual skills, particularly in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Somali, are preferred.
