Job Description

Position Overview

HDR, a leader in the power generation market, is seeking a qualified Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its national Power Generation team. In this role you will help clients develop, contract, and implement natural gas and renewable energy projects while providing comprehensive mechanical engineering support. You will lead the project mechanical team, coordinate with multi-discipline professionals, and play a key role in delivering high-quality engineering solutions. This role is based in Ann Arbor, MI, with opportunities available in several other locations across the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical team and coordinate with other engineering disciplines on power generation projects.
  • Provide technical and contractual support for detailed design and owner’s engineer projects.
  • Develop deliverables such as construction drawings, bid specifications, equipment sizing calculations, technical memos, feasibility studies, reports, and cost estimates.
  • Support project management by planning, scheduling, budgeting, and monitoring project status.
  • Mentor junior engineers and ensure adherence to industry standards and timelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Professional Engineers (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Extensive experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and design software (e.g., PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit).

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in power generation design.
  • Experience with gas turbines, steam turbines, and/or large reciprocating engines.
  • Design experience with simple cycle and combined cycle power generation.
  • Previous experience with an engineering power consulting or EPC firm.
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments with excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • Willingness to mentor less experienced engineers and EITs.
  • Experience ensuring projects stay within established schedules and budgets.
  • Willingness to travel (<10% travel required).
