Job Description

Position Overview

Penn Medicine is dedicated to its tripartite mission of providing outstanding patient care, driving innovative research, and educating future leaders in medicine. In this role, the Senior Data Engineer will design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and data transformation solutions to support data‐driven initiatives. Based in Philadelphia, PA, this position offers 8‑hour days (mostly remote with occasional in-person meetings) and the opportunity to collaborate with top clinical, technical, and business professionals at a leading academic medical center.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Integration and Processing: Design and architect scalable, reliable data pipelines to ingest, process, and transform large volumes of healthcare data from multiple sources.
  • ETL/ELT Development: Build and optimize ETL/ELT processes using cloud platforms like Azure and Databricks, ensuring efficient data extraction, transformation, and loading with maintained data quality.
  • Cloud Infrastructure and Technologies: Implement and maintain cloud-based data solutions and platforms (AWS, Azure, Databricks) to support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives.
  • Data Governance and Security: Enforce policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR), including access controls, encryption, and auditing measures.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor and optimize the performance of data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and databases to ensure reliability and scalability.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Work with cross-functional teams to define requirements, provide technical mentorship, and drive innovation within the data engineering team.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current with industry trends and best practices, continuously optimizing processes and workflows.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the department and organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Epic Clarity Data Model (must be completed within 6 months of start date)
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering, database management, or related roles with a proven track record of leading moderately complex projects
