Position Overview

The Small Commercial Underwriter Trainee position at The Hartford is designed for individuals looking to start a career in underwriting. This role involves participating in a comprehensive 14-week hybrid training program that combines self-directed learning with virtual classroom sessions, providing critical experience in underwriting small commercial risks. Trainees will work closely with experienced underwriters and sales teams to develop their skills in risk assessment, pricing, and customer relationship management, ultimately preparing them for a successful career in underwriting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support small business owners by working on the small commercial underwriting team.
  • Handle all commercial lines, including Business Owner's Policy (BOP), Commercial Automobile, Workers' Compensation, and Umbrella.
  • Develop and price individual risks accurately, analyzing loss and risk information.
  • Recognize 'red flags' and file inconsistencies to write profitable commercial business.
  • Partner with aligned territory sales representatives to achieve profit and growth objectives.
  • Build and leverage relationships with key agents to obtain new accounts and drive optimal business results.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and insurance experience.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations, and propose solutions.
  • Possession of resilience and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills.
  • Goal-oriented with a strong desire to deliver outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Acts with a sense of urgency and is responsive to internal and external customer needs.
  • Strong sales skills with the ability to negotiate and sell messages, including difficult ones.
  • Demonstrates satisfactory progress during the Training Program and achieves passing scores on all tests, case studies, and foundational underwriting assessments.
