Job Description
Position Overview
We are hiring a Surgical Tech in Hamden, CT! In this role you will assist in surgical and invasive procedures by preparing and providing sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment. You will maintain a sterile field and proactively support the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures
- Protect the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources
- Demonstrate safe operation of equipment and machinery and follow procedures for reporting and correcting unsafe situations
- Perform accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items
- Speak up with safety concerns and act as the patient’s advocate
- Handle specimens according to facility policy and procedures
- Adhere to standard precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment
- Perform interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels
- Perform interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection
- Assemble supplies and equipment required for the procedure
- Prepare and organize sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure
- Provide instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure
- Protect the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy
- Provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice
- Maintain a fire-safe environment
- Practice and monitor aseptic technique
- Comply with Universal Protocol and facility site validation and time-out policy
- Maintain radiation safety at all times in accordance with facility policies and procedures
- Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transport them to the decontamination areas
- Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes
- Provide hand-off reports to teammates that are accurate, concise, and pertinent to the patient’s condition and response to care
- Document episodes of care accurately, timely, completely, and legibly
- Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders
