Job Description

Position Overview

Under general direction, the 5215 Fire Protection Engineer performs challenging and responsible professional engineering review and inspection work in the specialized field of fire prevention and safety. This role advises fire inspection personnel, ensures compliance with fire protection and suppression system standards, and requires a licensed professional engineer with expertise in fire protection and safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reviews fire protection plans, systems, equivalency proposals, permit applications, and maps to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and standards; evaluates site permits, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans and specifications.
  • Advises and provides training to Fire Department personnel regarding applicable codes, technical engineering aspects of fire prevention, plan review, and technical research; prepares technical documents and assists in personnel training.
  • Inspects and witnesses acceptance tests for fire protection systems and participates in periodic inspections during construction to ensure compliance with approved fire protection plans and testing procedures.
  • Interacts with contractors, architects, engineers, building managers, owners, and other government agencies regarding fire code, standards, and ordinances; delivers lectures and arranges life-safety demonstrations; represents the Fire Department on technical issues.
  • Reviews codes, ordinances, and fire protection standards from other jurisdictions for possible local applications; assists in developing and revising codes, ordinances, standards, and administrative bulletins; evaluates new products, materials, and fire protection systems for local use.
  • Provides professional, technical guidance and assistance in the design, testing, and evaluation of proposed new fire-fighting apparatus, equipment, and fire-retardant materials.
  • Investigates fire sites to determine potential structural, mechanical, alarm, fire extinguishing, or other safety system failures; prepares detailed reports as required.
  • Evaluates performance-based analyses to determine the acceptability of proposed fire protection systems with respect to codes and standards; communicates design acceptability to Fire Department officials and conducts hydraulic water flow tests.
  • May act on behalf of the Senior Mechanical Engineer in his/her absence.
