Job Description
Position Overview
Freese and Nichols, Inc. (FNI) is searching for a highly-motivated, passionate, and experienced Professional Engineer to join our Stormwater Group in Houston, Texas. The ideal candidate will combine technical depth in hydrologic/hydraulic (H&H) modeling and stormwater design with strong project management and client coordination skills. You will play a key role in developing stormwater/water resources infrastructure and preparing preliminary engineering reports, design plans, technical specifications, and estimated project costs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage projects involving stormwater management, flood mitigation, and drainage improvement for municipal and regional clients.
- Oversee the design and analysis of stormwater infrastructure including detention/retention basins, open channels, and storm drain networks.
- Utilize hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software (e.g., HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, ICM, XP-SWMM, PCSWMM, HY-8) as applicable.
- Prepare and review plans, specifications, and construction documents, ensuring quality control and compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client communications.
- Support permitting efforts and coordinate with regulatory agencies and local jurisdictions.
- Work independently while overseeing teams of professionals and analysts.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years’ experience in stormwater management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
- Texas Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to become licensed within 6 months.
- Proficiency with software such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, ICM, PCSWMM, ArcGIS Pro, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.
- Strong understanding of stormwater infrastructure design principles, construction document preparation, technical specifications, and permitting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- CFM Certification and/or experience in floodplain management practices.
- Experience in a Project Management or Technical Leader role.
- Familiarity with Southeast Texas criteria.
- Experience with business development activities, including client relationship building and proposal development.
