Job Description
Position Overview
The Medical Assistant – LAB/Family Medicine at Advocate Health in Chicago supports patient‐centered care in an outpatient setting. Primarily working in the LAB, the role also assists across Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine. This position involves performing clinical tasks such as taking vital signs, conducting laboratory procedures, assisting with minor procedures, and ensuring smooth clinic flow.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepares and rooms patients by obtaining vital signs and documenting health information.
- Performs laboratory procedures including phlebotomy, strep tests, wound cultures, and specimen collection with proper aseptic technique.
- Assists physicians/Advanced Practice Clinicians with procedures such as pelvic exams, injections, and other clinical tasks.
- Administers routine medications, including immunizations, antibiotics, and vitamins under established orders and protocols.
- Communicates effectively with the healthcare team to ensure smooth clinic operations and patient care.
Required Qualifications
- Education: GED/High School Diploma with completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers (AHA) is required within 30 days of hire unless exempted by departmental leadership.
- Proven ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the Medical Assistant scope of practice along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be physically capable of performing patient handling tasks, including lifting up to 35 pounds and assisting with heavier lifts using proper equipment.
