Operating Engineer - Journeyman

Position Overview

McGuire and Hester is a construction company specializing in complete site work services including pipelines, grading, paving, concrete, landscape, and mechanical projects. We are currently seeking a heavy equipment operator responsible for operating various heavy equipment in construction, maintenance, and heavy civil work such as trenching, excavation, grading, bulldozing, and paving.

Compensation: $54 - $61 per hour, based on skills, experience and knowledge

Key Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment (e.g., backhoe, road grader, front-end loader, hydraulic excavator, skid steers loader, bulldozer, roller, compactor, and crane) for loading, hauling, and unloading materials.
• Assist crew in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting materials, and handling equipment with various heavy machinery.
• Perform routine inspections and notify supervisors of any equipment defects or needed repairs.
• Follow proper safety and security standards during all operations and actively participate in the Safety Bucks program.
• Prioritize and plan work activities efficiently while maintaining teamwork and individual accountability.
• Engage in physical activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, and handling materials, frequently lifting up to 10lbs and occasionally up to 50lbs.

Required Qualifications

• Education & Experience: Previous training and/or equivalent experience in operating heavy equipment.
• Language Skills: Understanding of English, particularly as it relates to jobsite safety and required duties.
• Mathematical Skills: Basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to follow simple one or two step instructions.
• Interpersonal Skills: Ability to resolve conflicts, foster a team atmosphere, and maintain accuracy and thoroughness in work.
• Computer Skills: Not required.
