Position Overview

SALARY OFFER WILL BE BASED UPON CANDIDATE'S EXPERIENCE.

This role as a Structural Plans Examiner involves performing structural engineering analysis and review of building plans in compliance with the Florida Building Code and other applicable regulations. The position requires careful examination of blueprints, sketches, and specifications, as well as field inspections to ensure that construction conforms to approved plans. You will interact directly with architects, engineers, contractors, and the public, and may assume supervisory functions in the absence of the Chief Inspector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural engineering analysis/review of building and structural plans in accordance with the Florida Building Code.
  • Examine blueprints, sketches, tracings, and specifications prior to the issuance of permits or construction approvals.
  • Conduct field inspections on new construction, remodeling, repairs, and condemnations to verify compliance with approved plans.
  • Approve or disapprove proposed plans and discuss necessary changes with architects, engineers, and contractors.
  • Interpret codes and ordinances, assist fellow inspectors, and enforce FEMA regulations as applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience reviewing building or structural designs for high-rise construction (taller than 15 stories).
  • At least 4 years of supervisory experience within the Florida Building Code environment, particularly in high-velocity hurricane zones (HVHZ).
  • State of Florida Professional Engineer license under the structural discipline.
  • Valid Driver's License (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) with the ability to upgrade as required.
  • Certification as a Structural Plans Examiner as prescribed by the Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals and Florida Statutes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in enforcement and supervisory roles within building inspections.
  • Familiarity with FEMA regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Experience operating under guidelines set by the Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals.
